I'd bet money this picture was taken by either Russell Lee, Dorthea Lange, or Walker Evans. Anyone who knows about those three photographers and their work will understand why. Wish I had time to do a thorough on-line search, but have too many other irons in the fire.

Then I'd better hold back on saying he looks like a serial killer. ;-O

i take on board your comments and thank you for them,it only goes to show that people perceive pics in an entirely different way.although there is a serious side to the pic it can be the same panic stricken face as when your suddenly handed a new baby with no experience..

...instead of trying to guess what is the background of the picture, it would be nice to know. If that is not possible, then each of us will see different things from various angles. Those angles very much depend on the life each of us has lived, the experiences and knowledge we have gathered along the way, and - most of all - on our imaginations. Given that there is no actual informaton, one interpretation is as good as another. - I don't see any amusement in this photo, myself. I see see a father who gets his firstborn on his lap and does not know what to do with it... but there is a definite look of sadness on his face.

We don't have to be serious..most of the time I'm not..but we see different things here..I see a weather worn farmer or rancher, a son of the soil not used to holding an infant, in the office of some kind of professional, maybe a doctor or lawyer....his facial expression seems to me that of a man striken by the news of some misfortune...maybe his wife just died...maybe there was no rain and his crop failed and his cows died and his place is being foreclosed on... I don't know, but I've gone back again and again and looked at the man's face, and whatever is going on in the picture, I don't believe it's amusing to him....but...we all bring our own unique experiences and expectations to photos, and the worlds and scenes we see are as different as our experiences.. ..if this fellow is what he looks like his life was as different and distant from that of a modern young urbanite as is the life of a Pathan tribesman..
