USS Macon and her sistership USS Akron were able to launch and retrieve airplanes while aloft. They were essentially flying aircraft carriers. Both ships were lost due to stormy weather. Akron went down in April , 1933, in the Atlantic off the coast of New Jersey , with the loss of 73 of her crew. Macon crashed into the Pacific in Feburary, 1935, but lost only 2 crewmen. The inability of the ships to handle rough weather aloft effectively ended the era of the armed airship .
