Maybe the tree isn't dead, and the doe could be pulling strips of bark off of the tree to eat because it can't get much green food in winter.

...and if there had been ocean spray, it would have melted the snow, so your "must be salt in it" theory must be an erroneous one. And the tree is not dead, necessarily; it might have bark on the other side.

...more like something in the graffiti paint that she is interested in. Even if the soil is saline, the root cells of the tree contain a membrane which allows water to pass through but prevents salt from entering. Only if the tree has been hit by ocean spray would the trunk have any salt on it.
