The damage is still visible, the statue was repaired using marble from the base. however Michelangelo's technique for polishing marble is lost. The Madonna's fingers and the end of her nose are not shiny like the rest of the statue. It's very apparent in reality.

Yes it is the real one. Here's the story thanks to Wiki: The most substantial damage occurred on May 21, 1972 (Pentecost Sunday) when a mentally disturbed geologist named Laszlo Toth walked into the chapel and attacked the Virgin with an axe while shouting "I am Jesus Christ." After the attack, the work was painstakingly restored and returned to its place in St. Peter's, just to the right of the entrance, between the Holy door and the altar of Saint Sebastian, and is now protected by a bullet-proof acrylic glass panel. The copy is at the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows in PoznaƱ - this copy was used as a model in reconstruction of original after damage in 1972. In anticipation of your thank you: You are welcomed.

In any case you bickering children, it is not the real one, it is but a copy. The real one, as any one who remembers will remember, was damaged years ago by a Jesus Impersonator, who attacked it with a hammer. I kid you not.

You may be right...I may very well be a "snobby prick"....rather be that than a provincial hick... I just find it astounding that anyone could be old enough to have actually attended a university without having at some point been exposed to what is one of the most famous pieces of art in the world..probably not your fault, and at least you have enough aesthetic sensibility to appreciate a work like that when you finally bumped into it...

I'd honestly have thought that someone who chose the nickname 'holycontagion' would recognize such an obviously Christian artifact.

No worries. I used to attend a uni with a serious art program and unfortunately they were snobs more often than not so I'm used to it. Either way I found a high-res copy of this beautiful statue on wiki. Cheers!

"Pieta, by Michelangelo" Thanks ya snobby prick that's all you had to say.

The reason BellCurve didn't post a title for this, Holy C, is that he probably assumed everyone in the world who has passed the 8th grade would recognize it as the Pieta, by Michelangelo...little did he reckon with the pathetic and abysmal level of art education and awareness in this country...It's in the Vatican, by the way..ever heard of that?
