Chipmunks are also known as ground squirrels... but they can (and do) climb trees. They create underground burrows to live in. These burrows have multiple entrances in case a chipmunk needs to escape a predator. Chipmunks are omnivorous. They eat, grains, nuts, mushrooms, berries, acorns from oak trees and the seeds from pine cones, dogwoods and other trees. They also eat insects, such as crickets, or even small lizards like salamanders. Chipmunks can be seen gathering up food in their cheeks, taking it back to their burrow to store it for the winter. Chipmunks are just squirells on crack.

Ther are squirrels and there are squirrels. You probably live in America and, for this reason, your idea of a "squirrel" is mostly limited to that ugly black fuzzy-tailed rats they call "squirrels" there.
