As part of an eight-city swing to promote the Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment to the Minnesota Constitution, hunters and anglers presented their platform in Bemidji Wednesday morning. Former State Sen. Bob Lessard and other sportsmen emphasized during their stop at Bluewater Outdoors that the amendment, which would add 3/8ths of 1 percent to the state‘s sales tax, said the amendment is necessary to make sure future generations can enjoy hunting, fishing and clean water. The amendment requires that 33 percent of the new revenue would go toward wildlife habitat, 33 percent toward clean water, 19.75 percent toward the arts and 14.25 percent toward parks and trails. “It’s pro-access, pro-user,” said Garry Leaf, president of Sportsmen for Change. “Hunters and anglers have been campaigning with one voice for dedicated funding for clear water and habitat for over a decade.” Former Minnesota Vikings coach Bud Grant, right, was part of a group of sportsman supporting the Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment with speeches at Bluewater Bait Wednesday morning. The council would consider the requests and make the allocations without adding another layer of bureaucracy, Leaf said. Lessard said hunting and fishing license fees could be raised forever, but, “What good is that if there’s nothing to hunt and fish for future generations? It’s not for us; it’s for our grandchildren.” Mark Johnson, executive director of the Minnesota Deer Hunting Association, said 350 organizations support the amendment. “We’re especially talking to sports groups,” he said.
