Papaver somniferum. About 40 years ago in Portland, Oregon, you could find these growing in the gardens of older houses. They were decendents of plants from seed purchased before it became illegal to grow them. If they were growing near the sidewalk, friends and I would slice the pods and come back the next night and harvest the raw opium. Here's another tip: culinary poppy seed is the same thing. Plant them very early in the spring; they need cool weather.

Sorry for the double comment, just reloaded the page... Opium poppy, I knew it! :) First it reminded me to Papaver somehow, but they are related. Nice photo!
