It's interesting and ironic that in the very place where civilization began ( although there may be equally ancient origins in the Indus valley , perhaps also in SE Asia ) there has been so little progress toward open societies, and the kinds of personal freedoms we in the west take for granted as our birthrights. Let me make it clear..I have ZERO interest in bombing, invading, or otherwise interfering with whatever kind of society the Iranians want for themselves, but I sure as hell wouldn't want to have to live in such a society.

So you're telling us that the "Cyrus Cylinder" was a document in stone, a contract from a past Persian government guaranteeing human rights, right? Well, judging by the chunk that's missing from that cylinder, it looks like at some point in the past somebody tried very hard to break that contract...

it is indeed cuneiform, and is from well before the persian empire even existed, somewhere between the sumerian and high babylonian era (3000~1500 bc).

It isn't a remarkable photograph but it is a remarkable object..magnify the image and you'll see the surface is incised with cuniform ( I believe that's the correct term ) writing, done while the clay was still soft...this is an example of some of the earliest writing known to exist...I have no idea what the subject is ( or was ) but much of the earliest writing was simple record keeping...
