It is a fungus called Antennicus orbis, still quite commonly found in some places. It is difficult to eradicate since its reproduction system remains to be unknown to science. It starts at the bottom of buildings and slowly works its way up to the top - to get more sunlight, it is assumed. The round heads usually face west, something else which is baffling the scientists because it is not concurrent with the sunlight theory.
