We had one of these perched in a tree just outside the house for about a week last winter. It was feeding on voles, which scurried through undersnow tunnels to reach the bird feeder. She (we discovered, by the higher-pitched calls of "Who cooks for you, who cooks for YOU-hoo?") would drop down onto the snow, and come up with a vole - perch on the branch, and feed it down, pull it back out, then down again, three times. Then the vole was gone. She and her mate still live in the woods behind our house, and we hear them calling frequently. We haven't had much trouble with voles this summer.

Lovely owl, Lilly! It's a Barred Owl (Strix varia). I have a stuffed owl guarding my back as I am writing this. He’s a Ural Owl (Strix uralensis), which had flown into electric wires and died. My uncle found him and took him to a taxidermist and now he lives with me. His name is Professor Andrew H. Muckle-Flugga.
