This happened in 1895 in Paris. The brakes failed and the train broke through the barrier, crashing through the terminal and down onto the street below. Amazingly, only one person was killed.

I remember when that happened. Madonna was all the rage, kids dressed like Michael Jackson, coal burning locomotives were crashing everywhere... takes me back.

The world has moved on enormously. When you expended $50,000 on a steam loco in 1950, you expected it to last 40 years. Yes, they were still very common in 1985.
