That photo was taken during the Great Depression, Chris, an economic crisis brought on by the exercize of un-bridled laissez faire capitalism without sufficient governmental controls or regulations...conservatives failed to see it coming and failed to take appropriate action to remediate might think we'd have learned our lesson, but our present mess is the result of similar conservative economic policies, based on the belief that markets have the magical power to regulate themselves...

present day america under Bush? why don't you people grow up. you absolutely fascinate science by existing without brains! at least half of you can't give a coherent argument based on facts that justify your Bush bashing. most of you can't think for yourselves [re: missing brains] and simply believe what you're told no matter how questionable the source. While obama pats you on the back with one hand, and sees you as nothing more than a bunch of useful idiots, he's picking your pockets with the other. Do you think that Bush was really the worst that could happen to this country? You only need to know two things to be a prophet; history and human nature! It's been said that all revolutions devour their children. Take a good hard look at that photo again. America today? Or the world in general, eight years from now!

I take offense to your remark about smokers. Yes I am a smoker, but I am not obese or low income or low education or social class.

reading these comments obviously most if not all from americans..makes me laugh.. there are poor people today.. for whatever reason.. some of their own doing, some circumstances.. but they exist.. and given the correct or respectful rights of others they can make their lives better.. this woman with these nine children.. could all very well be from one man.. who in fact left her... men do run when the going gets tough.. or maybe they are not.. but for whatever reason she has nine children..she has.. and you know what.. these children probably will grow up to have far better manners and social etiquette than most of you putting your two bobs worth in here on this comments page.. and one more little thing.. whilst you write your pathetic comments.. about this woman.. did any of you actually stop to take time to think of this womans mind set.. she is more than likely horribly depressed and hates her life, her situation and the life she has created for her children.. and did any of you also take on board the fact.. she is a mother with nine children.. with.. not abandoned.. left behind.. with.. fighting for, loving and caring for, .. you know.. this could have been your life it things were different.. circumstances...

There are still areas of this country where this photo depicts modern day America. A full third of Tennesseans (this was taken in Tennessee) live below the poverty level. In the mountain area of Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia it is rare that people get the same help as they would else where. Children don't go to school because buses nor cars can get to their homes. Generally, 2 or 3 generations back their families were either share croppers (generally looked at as a form of slavery) or coal miners. When the mine shut down taking any other form of businesses with or share cropping ended the families had no money to leave.

I´m confused, I thought the USA was a Christian country or are the teachings of Jesus only for 1 hour on a Sunday? Where is your compassion for fellow human beings particularly children who never asked to be born. Ignore their welfare at your peril.

How do these negative comments towards you have anything to do with being homosexual?

When it comes to getting sterilised - I nominate Vagina - anyone else??
2008-04-15 00:19:41
...and apparently, so is your mother.
2008-04-12 12:46:12
And yet compared to the noxious, brain-dead, festering, necrotic, pit stew of suppurating, ulcerated, venereal disease that spawned the nasty, little, self-hating, ingrown hair-pimple which blears back at you from in the mirror as you spend yet another day deeply self-absorbed in your never ending, compulsive, and narcissistic frenzy of near non-stop onanism, I'm sure that patito's mother is WAY more pure than Ivory Soap...
2008-04-12 03:51:08
You mother's a filthy pig whore
2008-04-11 02:46:52
Are you aware, Vagina, that most of the people in the world are and have been poor , certainly by modern American standards? And that in most of the world and for most of human history there has been no social safety net, no retirement plans, no social security for old people? And that the only way for most people in most of the world for most of human history to have anyone to take care of them in old age was to have children? No, you didn't know that , did you Vagina. You are too young and naive and innocent of the reality of the world to know about any of that. Your belief that anyone who disagrees with your opinion about anything is neccessarily stupid speak volumes about you. And one more thing, Vagina..try learning the differnce between 'your' and you're''ll help you sound a little less ignorant.

Though it's harsh, it's the simple truth. in the pussiefied state this world is in, sometimes people need to stop feeling bad and getting their faggy feelings hurt and crying about every little thing that dosent fit in to their preception of morality. IF YOUR POOR, STOP FUCKING AND GETTING PREGNANT!! If you disagree with this, your stupid as shit and shouldent breed. And zumi, who the fuck asked your dicksucking opinion anyway? Homo.

Jack is correct...there is a high positive correlation between obesity and low income, low level of education, low social class..and it's becoming that way with smoking..
2008-04-09 22:56:03
You are completely mistaken, Cho Je, since the people in the Depression-era photograph are apparently not underfed, while in present day America under Bush most of the poor are obese.
2008-04-09 21:20:44
Present day America under Bush.
2008-04-09 20:36:16
I know it's hard for young people who have grown up in the affluence of modern America to understand that there were people in this country as poor as the ones in this photograph, but all you have to do, Snookum, is find some collections of depression-era photographs by people like Dorthea Lange, Russell Lee, Walker'll see an America you didn't know good for you..expand your conciousness and awareness..and maybe make you grateful.
2008-04-09 17:10:17

Thirty highly toxic injections huh? HAHAHA Lemming....
2008-04-09 13:39:44
This is so posed. Caricatures of poorness. Haircuts, clean hair, strong limbs. Clothes are too perfectly poor looking to be so.
2008-04-09 13:27:28
It is most likely a 1930's Depression photo. The mother's skirt is a hessian flour sack. Another pointer is that the 'authoritarian' U.S. authorities of today would not permit a family with children in such depravity to remain like that. They would whisk them away and get a court order to 'protect' them. And part of that process would be to pump the little kiddies with up to 30 highly toxic injections. That said, the children look well fed and happy. They have their mother's love as well.

lives or lived? looks like its during the great depression or during the dust bowl
