Last March a female a tourist from Michigan riding in a small boat off the Florida coast was killed when a ray jumped out of the water, hit her, and knocked her down. Some reports said she was killed by the barb but in fact her death was caused by blunt force trauma. The ray weighed about 75 pounds and had a 6 foot wingspan. I know some of you will think this is another tall tale, but I don't joke about people getting killed.

Not really relevant to this picture. The incident you refer to was a Spotted Eagle Ray. The blunt force trauma was due to the fact that the woman was traveling, in a boat, in excess of 25MPH when she collided with the breaching ray. The ray did not survive the impact.

You may be right about that...pretty good bet the boat this was taken from wasn't doing 25 mph...

No! These are Cow Nosed Rays and this is not the species that killed Steve Irwin while he loomed over it.

Well, I was an admirer of Steve Irwin..he not only was entertaining and funny, but he got people interested in the natural world who might otherwise not have been ... but he did push the envelope a good bit and the odds caught up with him...sad, and we'll miss him, but the guy died doing what he loved doing..

No, Steve Irwin killed himself by getting too close to one of these creatures knowing they're not to be messed round with. RIP, but he should've known better. The ocean is their world and their space should be respected, they don't come on land and tease, stalk, probe, prod or kill us for no apparent reason.

cause they cant...
they find it quite difficult to breathe on land
nevermind move themselves!

Steve Irwin was not killed by these rays! All RAYS are not the same! All rays are not poisonous (these have a mild irritant)! Geez, do some checking before shooting off your mouths.

This is beautiful, in any case.

This is the same scene I encountered in North Myrtle Beach on June 5, 2008. I was stunned by the pure majesty of it all. Although the water is not as clear in South Carolina, the creatures swam within feet of us. They were only clearly visible when sucked up into the waves as they gracefully swam by. The migration I witnessed lasted for almost 30 minutes. It was AMAZING! I looked up "cow nose ray" when I returned home that evening and found information that this particular type of ray does not have the barb on the end of their tails as does a "stingray" and instead has one at the base of their...well, their butt (for lack of a more scientific term). If they feel threatened, they may poke you with this barb, but it is only similar to a bee sting, and from what I read, is not deadly. Seeing these wonderful (and peaceful) creatures "fly" by was something I will never forget!!!

Sandra,

Learn to spell. It would help re: your credibility.

How exactly does poor spelling help her credibility? Did it occur to you that she might not be English speaking? And there are only 2 spelling mistakes, I've seen a lot worse by (especially) Americans!
I happen to know that this IS a picture taken by Sandra, and that it has been recently published in the UK press.
