You can't fully blame Bush. After all, he WAS elected once and a half. Blame all the people who voted for him and the ones who didn't vote. There's a reason why stupid people can become presidents.

All governments suffer a recurring problem: Power attracts pathological personalities. It is not that power corrupts but that it is magnetic to the corruptible. Such people have a tendency to become drunk on violence,a condition to which they are quickly addicted."

I'm English, so I'm quite enjoying seeing you taking the piss out of yourselves (your media is shouting "America Sucks' louder than the rest of the world at the moment). You're the masters of stereotypes and now you're getting some pretty harsh ones of your own. You're all perceived as a bunch of fat brain-dead trigger-happy isolationists. I'm saying this in a posh stuttery accent while painfully trying to sip on my cup of tea without my bad teeth and oversized jaw getting in the way. Guffaw! Rather! etc...

As a resident of the blue bit in the bottom right corner I can laugh at this knowing that I am far enough away from the loonies to feel relatively safe. Having spoken to quite a few Americans (of the US species) and hearing that Australia is often expected to be somewhere in Europe, I would not be surprised if this map was a relatively accurate account of the geographic knowledge of the average US citizen.

If America is so bad, why are more people trying to come here than leaving here to go someplace else?
5 vote(s) | rate comment: | written by: jdgjtr at 2008-04-14 01:32:29 | reply to this

Nobody's saying the US is bad, just that americans are stupid.
57 vote(s) | rate comment: | written by: bob1 at 2008-04-14 01:35:24 | reply to this

Are they really stupid or are they ignorant? There is a difference. We are all the product of our own 'edumecation' system. If ignorance really is bliss, then this may account for the apparent happiness of most US citizens!!

How about both? lol... seriously though, there should be more focus on getting children to WANT to learn and think. The way the world works now, there is very little incentive to do so. The desire to learn and enjoy new experiences is far too underrated, that's why we end up with half the people in the US not accepting evolution.

Thing is, there are a tad over three hundred million people in the US..hard to generalize about that many folks, and especially since we probably have the highest level of population heterogeneity of any country on earth..there really isn't any such thing as an 'average' American...one more thing..Canadians and Mexicans are also Americans..so are folks from Nicaragua and Guatemala, Columbia and Venezuela, Chile and Argentina, Brazil and Peru..etc etc..
5 vote(s) | rate comment: | written by: patito at 2008-04-14 02:03:58 | reply to this

"especially since we probably have the highest level of population heterogeneity of any country on earth".... on what basis are you making that statement? I sure hear that a lot from americans, but honestly I've never heard anyone give me good reasons for believing that. I guess if you take the entire country as a whole, but the US is the 3rd or 4th biggest country in the world, so you would EXPECT it to be very heterogeneous if you look at the country as a whole. I think the vast majority of the US is fairly homogeneous compared to other areas of the world of a similar size. Anyway, I completely agree with the rest of your post, and "american's" appropriation of the term "america" and "american" used to be one of my pet peeves.
0 vote(s) | rate comment: | written by: bob1 at 2008-04-14 02:16:54 | reply to this

PS. What exactly do you mean by "heterogeneous" anyway? Do you mean differences in skin color, ethnicity, nationality, belief systems, education, class, language, culture, all of them, or what?

I AM NOT AN AMERICAN!! If this map WAS made by an American it would have been blank above the 49th parallel ( That's the long strait line across the top of your country ) I've traveled thoughout the States and have met American collage students living 50 miles from the border that had NO CLUE what is in Canada! The American school system teaches NOTHING about the rest of the world.

I love these discussions about Bush. He was constitutionally elected TWICE. If we would learn a bit about our own law we would know that popular vote does not elect a president. The Electoral Collage twice gave victory to George W Bush like it or not. Get over it and let's fix the educational system so that we are more aware of our world.

You didn't really address my points. You can list all of the subgroups that exist in the United states, but the united states is a HUGE country which spans the whole width of a continent, an island in the middle of the pacific, and a random piece of land completely separate from the main country. You would EXPECT a huge variety of people to live in such a big place, even if that place has a very low heterogeneity. Without knowing the relative densities of any of those given groups, as well as their distribution, (not to mention the densities/distributions in other countries) any statement comparing the heterogeneity between any two countries is utterly meaningless. I for one have not met ANY of half the kinds of people you mentioned.... and I think there are PLENTY of countries with similarly rich social and cultural textures. Many African and South American countries have an incredible amount of diversity, from native tribes to tourism to immigrants. And I hear that many European countries have similar diversity. ...... But anyway, this originally started out as a discussion of the average awareness among Americans of worldly affairs compared to that of people from other countries. None of the variables you mentioned (religion, nationality, etc) have much influence on this, and I'm sure the average individual from any of those groups is very ignorant about the beliefs and practices of all the other groups.
-1 vote(s) | rate comment: | written by: bob1 at 2008-04-14 03:42:21 | reply to this

Actually patito, Native Americans came, most probably, from Mongolia. They entered North America via the Bering Strait, which was land once upon a time. They then worked their way down over thousands of years to the end of South America. Inuits (the group that stayed north) have strong mongolian features.

As to your last paragraph, the answer is CANADA ;-)

Like Connie said, the answer to your last sentence is Canada. Canada also fosters its multiculturalism, meaning you can be Canadian AND keep your original identity. Can YOUR policemen wear their religious headdress?

Most people have no control over were they are born or their nationality, all they can do is try to be open minded and not believie every their governemt presents as the truth about them selfs or others. Most people dont hate each other until some tells them to.

Ya know why I think most individual Americans are so "stupid"? It's because they all moved here from other countries. The "average American" isn't American at all. They've all moved here from some other country. Hence the "Give me your poor, your weak, your huddled masses". We are a haven made of the conglomerate of all the other countries refuse. (I live in America, was born here, and will probably die here as well.) I saw this pic at one point earlier and laughed because of what the world thought of us in their own ignorance. I saw this posted and all the comments that followed and thought I would post as well. At this point I'm tired of this sick joke. You know what would end up being funny though? If an American was actually the one who had made this. (Definition of Irony)

No doubt a United States resident did make this. I think we have become very aware of others thoughts about us without realizing that we help keep most of the world free. People come here because we accept idiots and those of high education equally. The United States of America is a great place. That said so are Canada, All the countries of South America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. It should not be us versus them we are PEOPLE and that is what matters.

As a true conservative here in the US, I cannot wait for the day when we actually are 'isolationist'. I'm sick to death of American blood and treasure being spent on peoples that couldn't care less; likewise I'm sick of the carnage of all nationalities.

As an aside, I really don't know anyone (here in the US) that is this dimwitted; I've been to a great many of those nations and I'm an average guy. We do tend to look inwards rather than to the rest of the world; likely because we have so much here that most of us will never get the time to really enjoy all of our own nation, let alone the rest of the world. I can understand that many nations that are smaller than some of our states might take offense at this, but perhaps they'll get over it the next time they need a helping hand from their Uncle. Quite a lot of tall poppy syndrome going around, that much is certain.
