I found that number shocking and disturbing. It is really very sad. I always knew the number was high - I just never expected it would be *that* high.
It speaks volumes about the world we're living in...

I'd be interested to see the odds of actually making it to old age and dying of that are.

I don't believe "old age" is a cause of death. Being old would simply make you more prone to many of the things that cause death (e.g. your body has a harder time fending off illness and repairing itself).

True old age itself is not an illness I eat breakfast every morning with a man of 98 who still drives to Jacks restaurant and does his own yard work he has a sister of 93 who is in a rest home. I think the gene pool that you are born into has more to do with long life span than anything else (baring accidents of course)

At around 65 or 75 your odds of dying are 50% every year from any cause. At least according to some study I read a while back. They were looking at how death rates were higher for men and how it changed through age. Bottom line, if you're male, your odds of reaching old age pretty much suck.

Octavian, chances are these are US statistics although Spatch didn't say so. To answer your direct question about capital punishment, since there are about 2.2 million deaths in the USA annually, a rate of one death in every 62,468 would mean 35 deaths from capital punishment annually. That isn't far from the actual figure of 42 in 2007 as published by the US Dept. of Justice. Hence, that would omit capital punishment statistics from other countries which practice capital punishment, such as Japan, China, Iran, and Cuba.
I notice some odd omissions in these statistics, though. AIDS kills 400 times as many Americans as capital punishment does, so if these are USA statisics, why list the one and not the other? If these are not USA statistics, there is even less reason to omit AIDS, the scourge of Africa.

Jason, he is correct. You're referencing the percentage of people who die of suicide as part of the population, while this refers to the odds of actually dying of suicide.
Think about it this way, roughly 2.5 million people die in the US each year. Nearly 10,000 people die of suicide each year in the US (wikipedia). That means roughly 2-2.5% of deaths in the US are caused by suicide. The figure of 1 in 119 may take into account other nations, which may account for a figure closer to 1.2%.
Basically, you neglected to take into account the total number of deaths. When dealing with percentages, you can not ignore all variables.
Hope that helps :)

Did "Total odds of dying, any cause 1 in 1 (100%)" make anyone else a little depressed? Maybe I'm just 1 in 119. That's actually kid of depressing too. Thanks a lot, internet.

I call bogus, mainly since dying of natural causes is not included. And I would think that at least some people still die of those in the US.

Where are the odds on dying from terrorism?! I'm sure they're in the lightning area, and yet we spend more on preventing it than all the other ways of dying combined!!! Why? Because it's dramatic. . . we need some perspective!!!

I think its great news.
If a plane falls on you not much you can do but for all most all of them you can do things to lessen your risk.
I plan to defend against all of the big risks and die at 106 from a wayward bottlerocket.

What I've gleaned from the comments above:
1) Not every cause of death is included. The "all other causes" category is nearly 60% of all deaths.
2) This sampling of causes isn't necessarily contiguous. Some omitted causes may be higher in number than those included above.
3) Most of the statistical disagreements seem to stem from a confusion between cause of death as a portion of all deaths, vs. cause of death as a portion of the population. Most people didn't die in the timespan / region under consideration.

Although this picture includes bee's and hornets, animals in general were left off. Which animal kills more people than any other? Mosquito. They kill more people than all of the other animals combined. Mules kill about 4000 people a year.
