The block in the middle is the resistor which emm..resists electricity. Electricity is sent from one empty circle to another, but electricity will not choose the shortest path, but the path of the smallest resistance, thus, "resistance is futile" which is also a motto of the Borg from Star Trek. Yeah I know it's not funny if someone has to explain it to you. :-P
