Very emotive photos when explained as you did. Thanks for posting them so you can bring home the reality of this futile conflict to those who maybe have no idea why we are bothering to let our troops fight these terrorists.

I wasn't saying that fighting them is futile there, just about the pointless slaughter of our young men and how it really touches lives.

If you are actually a service member, you would know your duty is to uphold the safety and security of your nation, not your president. Go fucking die under a rock.

As did the president. And then he goes off and says that the Constitution is "Just an old piece of paper"
Yeah he really said that. As did Woodrow Wilson when he was elected..and started spying on AMERICANS!

"Steve" did not sign the dotted line and look @ the cost to him..1 brother. We need to liberate this country b4 we mess up any other ones!

I lost 3 cousins in law when tower 2 fell on them. We have to fight terrorism with the same resources and the same resolve we used in WW2, but Iraq isn't the place. Over 4000 American men and women died in Iraq and Afghanistan so bush's special interest cronies can get rich. In only 3 years and 10 months we defeated nazi Germany, facist Italy and Imperial Japan. Today, we can't even find Bin Laden because the longer the administration keeps this war going, the more money ends up in the pockets of bush, cheney and their special interest friends. Believe me, it's a lot better to do your tour in Leavenworth than to come home dead of #u%@ed up for life. We are not prepared to to go to war against the Nations which are harbouring the terrorists.

I'm so sorry but war never was the solution for anything. The problem it's not the place of the war or the resources for winning it. This world it's not the same that one hundred years ago!!! The only way to solve conflicts in the modern world is TO TALK!!! and distances between occident and orient are bigger and bigger every day due to this wars and poking the nose in internal things of other countries.

It is a powerful picture - with a President in power who is plainly using his position to further his family's self-interest, the point is that the US armed forces are simply a private army of oil interest. Innocents, yes. Pointless, no. Well ... maybe ... "we" own the country now and yet oil prices rise. FAIL!

Firstable i very sorry for Steve & his broder, original or not, the reality is truth... war is only a bussiness to take control over the world and the global economy, they don´t care about innocent lives & ignore family, brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers and all precious life all over the world. I am sure they could kill you in an instant if they think you are a menace for his interest, like oil today maybe "clean water" tomorrow. My advice, watch your own yard, maybe they are there already. This is not a question of faith, language or territory, sadly its just a question of time...

Guess I forgot to mention that December 7th, 1941 to September 2nd, 1945 is actually 3 years, 8 months and 28 days, give or take a day or so. I'm not impressed with American schools, but I am glad that we're not all speaking German now. Perhaps we should have stayed out of the European theater during the war and left everyone to their fate. I wonder how the people of Israel feel about that? And the people of Scandanavia and the rest of the civilized world for that matter. I've also noticed that since WW2 America has only waged war against non caucasians. Today, wars are fought only for political and economic reasons, Gulf war 1 and 2 included. Sadly, the US is simply not prepared to fight against the nations which harbour and train terrorists. This includes the Sudan, Libya, Pakistan, Lebanon and Syria. Saudi Arabia is also questionable and dumbass Bush doesn't realize that we couldn't even win against North Korea right now. I've also noticed that since President Kennedy was assasinated, The US standaerd of living has been going south as well. This tells me a lot about our very own government and who is really running things.

Actually it comes down to what you believe politically. I Study history very closely and wikipedia certainly doesn't have all of the answers. These nations that are harbouring and training terrorists must be confronted and dealt with by more direct means and methods, but we simply are not prepared to do so now. Presently Gulf War 2 is being fought so that bush's Haliburton and Blackwater USA cronies can get rich, and also to drive oil prices up to benefit bush and his oil baron cronies. One reason history keeps repeating itself is bacause noone remembers the lessons of past wars. We need to get out of Iraq now, but 15 of the 19 hijackers on 9/11 were from Saudi Arabia. We need to end our dependence on OPEC oil because buying oil from them only funds terrorism. And did you know? The Nobel prize committee funds terrorism. That's right. In their infinite wisdom, they actually awarded the Nobel peace prize to Yassir Arafat. A prize which includes a cash award of over 1 million dollars. Anyone who gives a truckload of money to a terrorist is part of the problem. Martin Luther King, Jr. was certainly a good choice for the Nobel peace prize. Arafat, however, was not. Don't lecture me about history. Sure the people of Europe had to endure World War 2 for 6 long years, but we,ve endured Operation Enduring Occupation for 5 years now and I'm sick of it because it's only being fought to enrich wealthy politicians and corporate fat cats. Yet WW2 was fought on a much larger scale. It's past time for the People of Iraq and Afghanistan to step up and fight for themselves because freedom is a gift that has been handed down to us from those who have gone before us to preserve it, which only belongs to those who want it, understand it and have the onions to fight for it. Perhaps you feel that this latest quagmire is being fought for other reasons. It is. All economical and political. If the terrorists want to live in the 3rd century, then they should be blasted back to the 3rd century. I've already seen enough points of view to last another 10 lifetimes.

Everyone that lives in America is an immigrant so do not be ignorant. It only represents the fact that you have no clue in which how you exist or where you belong.

English is sixty percent German and forty percent Latin.

He volunteered to defend his country. He DID NOT volunteer to die for George W. Bush.

His life was in the hands of Congress and the President. They made the choice to send him through the wire. They made the choice to go to war. They betrayed him.

He was brave. They are cowards.

The Greeks used to say that in times of peace, children bury their parents, in times of war, parents bury their children. One would hope that when we go to war, we would do so with proper justification for just that reason. As an American, I'm ashamed to say that this time, we didn't. You ignorant bastards that think we're in Iraq for the oil have no clue! Quit spitting on the graves of brave American soldiers who put their lives on the line everyday to protect freedom and democracy around the world! Exactly where is all this oil that we're supposedly taking from Iraq? Saddam Hussein was a brutal dictator and he had to be stopped! Thousands upon thousands of innocent Iraqi civilians were tortured and slaughtered during his reign of terror; mass graves are still being discovered today! The United States got bitch-slapped on 9-11-2001 so we took the fight to the front. We stomped the Iraqi military and Saddam's own people tried him and put him to death. Anybody remember that? President Bush and his administration acted on poor intelligence and yes, this was not the best way to initiate the war but it would have happened eventually! Please educate yourself on the atrocities committed by Saddam Hussein and maybe you’ll have a better understanding why we’re there. Please stop with the oil bullshit!
10 vote(s) | rate comment: | written by: eroz at 2008-03-28 16:08:09 | reply to this

Thank you, eroz. Your statement made more sense than most of the replies I have read. What happened when Saddam invaded Kuwait and we came to Kuwait's defense? "No blood for oil!" Where is all this cry against war when other countries are starting the violence? If Saddam had not been a murderous tyrant who killed his own people with WMD (Sarin Gas) then we wouldn't have needed to put a stop to the possible risk he could have eventually posed to us. He made no effort to hide his hatred for America. All countries deal in warfare because humans are animals, after all. In the words of Tom Waits, "We are monkeys with money and guns."

I'm sorry for anyone's loss everywhere.

"to protect freedom and democracy around the world!"

And who is to say that the rest of the world wants, needs, or can handle democracy? You say that we are defending democracy yet one of the key tenets of democracy is freedom to choose. How can we be defending democracy when we are not letting these countries choose democracy but are instead forcing it down their throats?

being prior service myself i understand that when you sign up, it is a commitment of your life you are giving and sometimes that commitment is fulfilled-I am lucky to be here today and lucky to have served my country. No matter if I agree or STRONGLY disagree with the reasons behind this war (I too have lost family in Iraq)-a life is a life and it was given knowingly and freely to protect the idea that all men are created equal and have the same rights as each other and that ideal SHOULD apply to everyone.

It doesnt mean that is how our government sees fit to use that ideal but I am proud to say I stil believe in it and as long as we have others willing to go forth and commit their life to that ideal-it will never die.

As a person in the military, I speak for every man and woman that are in the armed forces. The war MAY be for stupid reasons and everyone might not agree with Bush. But if you say you don't support President Bush and you support the troops you are lying. When I signed up for the military I knew I had to follow orders and respect the decisions of my superiors but I STILL SIGNED THAT LINE. Every hero that dies over there KNEW what they had to sacrifice. If they didn't believe in fighting for bull shit then they (I) wouldn't have signed that dotted line. President Bush is our Commander in Chief that means we follow his orders just as we would an officer. I will respect and follow Bush till the end.

when somebody is paid to go to war(or go to kill or torture handcuffed people (you remember Abu Ghuraib picz?) , he/she should know that he/she is recieving his blood-money in advance!!.
The grief of Steve,s brother is undestandable but Steves'/a paid hero/ very questionable.

Well they are in Iraq as a diversion or really an accident. They have always had problems with oil deals. They ransacked through Iraq because they thought the people they were looking for were there when in fact we all really have no clue why they are there. The man in the picture did his duty whether or not we agree with it or not. The boy seemed to know before he left that would be the last time. The tags are immature and cold - why people die for no reason - that kind of attitude.

its such a sad thing to see, and no one has the right to say anything about him crying.
everyone would cry if someone you loved died.

remember that.

If someone you loved died would you also feel compelled to take pictures of yourself crying and use them to gather sympathy and political support on the internet?
Real grief is not something for show.

There's nothing tragic about simple cause and effect. Since the dawn of time, young men have gone off to war, and some of them did not come back alive. At least they have training, weapons and artilerry support. I feel much more sorry for the defenceless civilian children in the country they go to occupy. They didn't volunteer to be there.

May this war end before more boys have to cry. Other wars will still be, humanity is just human, but may at least this one, so very stupid and lie-based war end. May the political change in USA make this kind of pictures impossible.

My favorite thing about the U.S. military is the fact that they kill so many civilians and people completely innocent of any wrong doing at all, every time they scratch their ass. I watch the death tolls every single day and I must say, the ratio of civilian deaths to that of U.S. soldiers is very disproportionate. The same holds true for dead U.S. soldiers vs. the children they kill. They same holds true for U.S. soldiers vs. the women they kill. When you kill somebody with military hardware, "by accident", that's bullshit, it's straight up murder and whether you pulled the trigger yourself or served the guy who did his lunch that day, you're participating in murder. Let's not forget that these soldiers all feel that defending one's own country is a legitimate reason to murder them. I pay my taxes, that's the extent of my support for the troops, they should be thankful that the American worker has built this great land for them to live in, rather than joining the Army and making us weaker through senseless violence and idiocy.

This picture have made me speechless. Even though it is not my sorrow it displays, I feel it as if it's a memory. As I gazed upon this picture, I sat still and quiet. The tears from the brothers emerged from my eyes, and all I did was looking at a picture. I don't know how to describe this picture any better and what power it holds.

A pointless war fought for all the wrong reasons, it wasn't for the liberation of Iraq it was for the liberation of Iraq's Oil fields, it was a war of economics... There were no weapons of mass destruction, there were no links to Al-Qaueda/bin laden, and mainly it was a liar who led the world to war.
There is no closure for the various families & losses on both sides are staggering, they aren't counting the civilian deaths either.
I lost a dear friend in 9/11 (Twin towers) & 11/9 (Hotel bombings in Amman), so loss I do understand, Bush and his ilk should be put on trial for warcrimes, but mainly for lying to the people and sending all these young people to their deaths in a country that isn't even theirs.
Dying for your country is NOT a thing of glory when it's done for all the wrong reasons. And what about all the disabled veterans from both wars!

This photo was most likely not shared so everyone can get their political views out. This family lost a loved one. It is a touching piece of history that was shared. A moment in time that should take us all to a place of being proud of our men and women who signed up to protect us and our country.
I am a proud daughter and grand daughter and niece of Vetrans. Please remember to pray for our troops and our Veterans.
