Countries in the Middle East hav always wanted/needed to be ruled by strongmen. They are very much a tribal culture. So, it is very difficult for various tribes/regions in one of those countries to reach an agreement for the overall good of the country. Their loyalties are first and foremost with their tribal leaders, not the head of the country. Even Pakistan, which is supposed to be fairly advanced, is very tribal. It has so many factions that it is almost ungovernable.

The sad fact is that after almost five thousand years of civilization the Middle East has not produced a single genuine working democracy. Is Assad is overthrown, which he deserves, he will probably be replaced sooner or later by another dictator or strongman, for the simple reason that there are no traditions of democracy or self rule in the area, which is, as is the rest of the Middle East, a tribal stew. Democracy is difficult enough in nations with democratic traditions and long-standing democratic institutions: witness the present debacle in the United States.

Freedom of expression is a democratic value to which most of the countries - that are represented by people on Pixdaus - presumably ascribe.

While we should and do discourage the posting of overtly politically partisan photos here, there is no way to avoid the expression of political opinions here in the comments, nor any real need to avoid such expression. No harm is done, and if the sentiments expressed are disturbing to anyone they are free to go elsewhere or to avoid reading the comments.

Dangerous Islamist fraction! Ha! What a lame excuse to do nothing. It's always about the money. International corporation support a Assad because he allows them to do things that they can't do at home. Politicians protect interests of corporations. Period. And when people start to demand a change they became a "Dangerous Islamist". I'm from Croatia, one of ex Yugoslavia republic and we have the same situation except we were "Dangerous Fascists".

Pixdaus is a cite for photography. Political discussion SHOULD HAVE NO PLACE HERE.

You`re right Connie but we still need the Canadian efforts to end the dictatorship regime. Canada should pull it`s ambassador and must ask the Canadians there to leave immediately at least it must save the Canadian citizens .

Thanks for your response 'freedom to syria'. BBC has announced that the U.S. has tightened sanctions on Syria. The US Treasury said it was targeting the financial resources of Syrian President al-Assad. My question is why Canada has severed diplomatic ties with Libya but not Syria. More than 2,000 Syrian civilians have been killed since an uprising began four months ago against President Assad. On Monday, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Bahrain recalled their envoys in a bid to pressure Syria to end the bloodshed. But Canada refuses to do so. A government spokesman said it is "pleased to see a growing coalition of nations" standing up against the Assad regime, but suggested pulling Canada's envoy isn't a smart move WHY? Canada says there are thousands of Canadians living in Syria right now..."pulling our ambassador at this very moment would leave those Canadians in the hands of the Assad regime." Well, these Canadians are actually Syrians by birth doing business in Syria. You want to work and spend your money in your former country? Fine...but it's your risk and Canada should not make its decisions based on them. We need to tighten the noose on Assad - isolate him and his regime. On the other hand: Louis Delvoie, a former Canadian ambassador to Pakistan and Algeria and research fellow at Queen's University says pulling Canada's ambassador to Syria would also mean an end to Canada's diplomatic influence on the current regime."Any pressures you might want to bring for diplomatic channels end at that point," If you're still saying that you want to reform the Assad regime, then you keep diplomatic relations in existence." But, I highly doubt that any country, any diplomatic efforts will succeed in reforming the Assad regime. Those people do not understand diplomacy; they just understand violence and complete dictatorship.

You`re right Connie, Washington is not thinking to remove Assad away that`s why he`s killing people with no fear of any one even th UN is not taking it`s responsibility. And for the dangerous Islamist factions it`s not exist on the reality life it`s a big lie that any dictator will unleash to the world to keep them silent and that`s what is happening. Also don`t forget Mubarak and Bin Ali they scared the world from dangerous Islamist factions but nothing happened.my friend we are muslims and we know that there`s nothing dangerous to any one more than the dictators they who created the Islamist factions to do some kind of pressure on USA and Europe and because of that lie we`re suffering for more than 45 years of killing and torturing and raping women .But again we will prove to the world again that Assad is a big lier and we will remove him soon (inshallah)

Can't you get satellite tv from other places? Europe or maybe Al Jazeera ? How about internet, etc? You can get Pixdaus, but maybe you are an ex-pat and not actually living in Syria ?

We hear in Canada that Assad is as evil as his father was. He does not hesitate to have killed anyone who opposes him; he has no conscience. My understanding is that the concern in the rest of the world, particularly in Washington, is who would replace Assad, so they do not push as hard to remove him as they did with Mubarak.the removal of Assad, who will replace him. Apparently, there are dangerous Islamist factions ready to move in. I would like to hear your point of view 'freedom to syria'.

In Syria we don`t believe the syrian Tv it`s Assad`s tv so we need to be connected to the world and letting the world see the massacre against innocent people by Assad`s bands (Shabeeha).

This is why Assad will finally be defeated.
