The mountain is sacred to Tibetan Buddhists who circumambulate the massif, as they do for the Holy Mount Kailash and a few other sacred mountains. In chinese, it is known as Kawagebo or Meili Xue Shan (Meili Snow Mountain). Meili is the name of the village at its foot, close to the bottom of the Mekong gorge, more than 16,000 ft below the summit.
