Thank you for this clarification about Bush's real powers. I am the first to admit that I do not understand our economy but I do understand that my life financially is harder under the Bush Administration. I agree that we give him too much credit but while he's busy insuring his war in Iraq, the rest of the country went down the drain. Mr. Bush has never lead this country into anything positive. He seems to only be interested in his own agenda. It's odd to me that we, the American tax payers, never have a real say about how our country is run. I will be glad when the business cycle you wrote about turns the other way.

I hate bush, but this crap doesn't belong on this site.
2008-07-10 18:47:32
There are lies, damn lies an statistics. History, 30 years from now, will be very kind to GW Bush.
2008-04-30 13:28:05
So was Franklin...
2008-04-30 11:55:19
Just Saying; I teach US history and you are RIGHT.
2008-04-30 11:47:01
Jimbo, you may be right the Republican Congress passed all of Bushs' lame ideas.
2008-04-30 11:40:26
Anon, Bush was not elected president, he was appounted by the Supreme Court.

I'm actually sorry to inform you that in this case, being 'proud' doesn't cure you from also being very uninformed about your own nation's history. The American Bald Eagle *is* a carrion bird, meaning that for good part of its diet, Bald Eagles scavenge rotten flesh from the carcasses of dead animals. Even at the time our forefathers were choosing a symbol of America, people knew that this was one of the dirty secrets of the Bald Eagle. The fact that Bald Eagles are carrion birds was even noted by Benjamin Franklin, who suggested that the Turkey would be a better choice as a symbol of our fledgling Republic, due to its cleverness, its masterful camouflage, and its speed.

Don't be so blind - we're certainly more merciful than most countries have been, but our behavior in Third World countries during the Cold War is nothing to be proud of.
2008-04-12 05:35:27
Why are repugs so bad at grammar?
2008-04-12 01:53:45
FUCK YOU describing the American Eagle as a scavenger! It is the symbol of a proud nation, one that has fought on behalf or helped just about every other nation in the world! FUCK YOU RETARD!

I don't believe you have to be an economist to understand that if you fight an expensive war for five years you either raise the tax revenue to pay for it or you put it on the credit card. The Bush Administration has done the latter. Is that anyone's idea of fiscal conservatism and responsibility? As for those who are unhappy about posts such as this one...people come here for all sorts of reasons..we like all sorts of things..and while I personally like a photo of a cute kitty, a sexy babe or a dreamy landscape as much as the next guy, I also get a kick out of this sort of thing. No one is forcing anyone to read the posts or the comments.

Yup I understand earlier comments regarding Bush being blamed for various negative values in the chart.... cycles in the economy, individual responsibility in spending, etc., BUT if the numbers showed reflected a positive spin on the categories displayed...? You don't think GW et al would be taking credit ? Huh? Seriously? - Yah and I agree, I'd just as soon entertain myself with different visulas also.
2008-02-22 09:32:30
WERE DID THIS DATA COME FROM MOVEON.ORG, GOD YOU PEOPLE JUST DONT GET IT.
2008-02-19 04:01:36
Before you Bush stiffs whine, remember that this chart is data, not an opinion. If you want to prove he is okay, show us some data that 'proves' this instead of providing conjecture or random finger pointing.
2008-02-14 13:29:42
Hopefully there wont be so many huge negative things getting worse in America when we get a new president and we will be improving our statistics. The President's position in America (unfortunately... except in this instance) is usually the scapegoat for America's problems.

WEBMASTER! Please keep political crap like this off of the site. Same goes for the religious bashing, profanity tagging, etc. Most of us are here for interesting pictures, not to wallow in the mire with the pigs.

As a working stiff trying to live as simple as possible, I know that economics, political science and other related college subjects are just a bunch of psychobabble bullshit. The fact is not only are we in the worst economy since FDR's first term, Bush was installed through a bloodless coup detat. We have to stop being the sugar daddy of the world, especially with over 36 million Americans living below the poverty line. Most of them children who have nothing to do with Bush's vandetta against Saddam Hussein. Saddam contracted a hit against the old man and that's why Bush sent our loved ones into Iraq, rather than to where the terrorists are being trained and harbored. The reason our government hasn't seriously cracked down on illegal immigration is simple. They want to globalize America under a new world order. As Americans we don't have to tolerate it. Bush got us into this war so that his cronies can make a bundle in Iraq, and to spike oil prices, which means more money in his pocket. It's time to get out, and for the Iraquis to shit or get off the pot, because a people who aren't willing to stand up and fight their own battles don't deserve to be free. Freedom is a gift that must be paid for in blood. Empires come and go. For a constitutional democratic republic to stay, it must be maintained.
2008-01-26 09:35:45
or because he had buddys. and would you seriously use the words 'Bush' and 'smart in the same sentance?
2008-01-26 04:18:32
I would like to see this comparison between Bill Clinton, and the one bevore...
2008-01-25 12:47:17
@oldnwise: Thank you for living up to you moniker. Lord knows we need more places to escape politics. I mean, really! TV these days seems to be about major policy issues and informing the public and crap. Where's the beauty pageants? Why isn't UFC on more often? Now we're inserting politics on the web, too. Jeez, isn't there anywhere we can go to just be *entertained*. I mean, what happened to the good old web of animated GIFs and pron? I come here and various lolcat related sites precisely because I want to be entertained. Bread and circuses, that's what democracy needs more of dammit.
2008-01-25 11:16:14
It's a real shame that a nice, entertaining site like this has to be defaced by garbage political propaganda like this. There are thousands of sites out there that would welcome your tripe; please keep it out of here. I come here to get away from the political slime, whether it's Democrat or GOP. Webmaster: I'm sure you know there's no 1st Amendment freedoms on a private site. Please don't let this type of garbage make me and others like me find another place to relax.
2008-01-25 11:05:27
If you think all eonomists think alike (unless that was sarcasm) you obviously haven't read anything by Dr. Walter Williams, a brilliant economics professor at George Mason University.
2008-01-25 08:16:11
hopefully for you and your's economy's sake, there wont be a reason to blame anyone :)
2008-01-25 08:07:37
How much of this can be blamed on the congress? Bush seems to make a good scapegoat. who will we blame when he leaves??
2008-01-25 07:19:31
The economy is cyclical... that's a fact. Its pretty hard, however, to dream up an excuse for changing us from a well liked nation to a passionately hated one.
2008-01-25 06:57:19
Oh yeah, Bush was "elected" president. Can't believe some people still believe that shit. What more can this guy argue than statistics? Are statistics still not enough for you Bushie loyalists?
2008-01-25 06:27:23
Brian - I completely agree (maybe because I study economics, and economists think alike). Causality is definitely not proven, but it is a nice display of the changes.
2008-01-25 06:18:43
Your failed 'king' is worthless. FACT!
2008-01-25 06:11:39
As an American who likes to complain for no real reason, I think Bush is directly responsible for it being cloudy today. Also, I pay $1,200 a semester at my nationally accredited college. BU$$$H
2008-01-25 06:05:49
As an American living under Bush, I'm glad we can pin the blame on him for things that he, nor any president, is related to at all. More consumer credit card debt? His fault! I shouldn't be expected to be responsible for my own spending!
2008-01-25 05:48:31
More importantly, isn't it pathetic that some people try to inject politics into every facet of our lives, even if it indicates that they are emotionally stunted?
2008-01-25 05:31:01
And what credibility do you have on the subject? Do you have an informed opinion, or did you read it on some livejournal somewhere? I'm by no means a fan of Bush, but I'm equally critical of empty thought. At least Bush was smart enough to get elected president, even if he is a little crazy.
2008-01-25 05:18:10
As an American living under Bush I believe the situation is much worse than the numbers indicate. To put it so even a Economist can understand. The Standard of life for most Americans has declined.
2008-01-25 04:17:03
As an Economist I believe the figures regarding the economy are being taken out of context. In late 2000 and early 2001 we were at the peak of the business cycle followed by a trough. When todays economy is compared to approximately 1997/1998 where we are in the same place in the business cycle we are only slightly below where were should be. Using 2000/2001 as a benchmark sets unrealistic expectations of the current economy. While I do not agree with many of Bush's actions I feel you are overestimating his influence regarding the economy. You are simply giving him too much credit.
