So..people who climb high mountains, or scale sheer rock faces, or drive fast race cars, or sail small boats across big water, or hike in bear country, or knowlingly engage in any activity in which there are clear and obvious risks and hazards are, according to your logic, just a bunch of fools...okay...I'll buy it...but I intend to have fun with my fellow fools..you be sure and stay safe in your snug little nest where nothing bad can possibly happen to you..

"my point is that not everyone who does foolish things is necessarily a fool.." "I think that if somebody knows the risk/hazard of something and continues to do it, is a fool." that's the point, a bouts! unfortunately, many do not understand this point...

I think that if somebody knows the risk/hazard of something and continues to do it, is a fool. But like Patito said, back then is was cool or the thing to do. Heck they had ads with Doctors telling people that Chesterfields were the best cigarettes. Nobody was knew it was bad for you. And if somebody did know, they kept it a secret.

Everybody smoked back then Sonny..actors, doctors, teachers, coaches, airline pilots in the cockpit..depending on how old you are probably at least one or two of your parents or grandparents smoked...there was enormous social and peer pressure to smoke, not to mention advertising everywhere telling people that smoking would make them look cool, sophisticated, debonair and, depending on gender, either manly or seductive. Nobody really understood how dangerous it was...my point is that not everyone who does foolish things is necessarily a fool, although some of them may have been...just like not everyone who makes condescending judgements about the behavior of other people is necessarily an asshole...although some of them may be..
