20 years ago this could have been seen in my village. Today it is only a memory. New regulations. No pigs may be kept outdoors. Everything must be labeled ...

You are right on target, Ms P...people who study the relative intelligence of animals believe that pigs are at least as smart as dogs, and may even have the edge..they are also capable of as broad a range of emotions as dogs...most modern urban humans simply have no concept of what has to happen to get those nice, neat, sanitized little packages of meat to their grocery stores...

Indeed, these pigs are happy, compared with 'factory farm' pigs that are confronted with conditions such as these: Gestation crates Two-foot-wide stalls in which pregnant sows are confined repeatedly for months at a time, with their movements severely restricted (e.g. insufficient room to turn around) Farrowing crate Another movement-restriction device, this one designed to immobilize the sow while she is nursing her piglets Unnatural Flooring Floors of wire mesh, metal grating, fiberglass, or concrete, with no bedding materials Snipped tails Piglets' tails are cut off to reduce tail biting, which is caused in the first place by the stress of the cramped quarters Overuse of Antibiotics These are required to keep animals healthy in overcrowded, stressful, non-natural environments. - How can the meat of animals that have been pumped full of antibiotics become healthy food for us? Noxious atmosphere Closed environments where the air contains ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, feed dust, and the gases from decomposing fecal matter In addition, industrial farms are super-incubators for viruses, as proven by the swine flu. Enjoy your breakfast of bacon tomorrow morning.
