The cemetery was established by Napoleon in 1804. It has 118.6 acres; it's like a little city in the city of Paris - alleys and alleys of tombstones - some are as big as little chapels. Many famous people are buried there...from Oscar Wilde to Sarah Bernhardt to a Bourbon prince to politicians and so on. It's the history of France. Even with a map, I often got lost. It was a very sunny and very hot day when I was there; yet I kept looking around to make sure there was someone not too far away. It's beautiful to see, yet a little spooky...some tombstones are very very old and crumbly.
