Montmartre is a hill in the 18th district of Paris - the Right Bank. The cathedral is called Basilique du Sacre Coeur. When you hike up the hill (you can take a venicular?) and you come upon the basilique, you are stunned by its impressive white dome and size with many stairs leading to it. Montmartre is a restaurants (tourist traps if not careful) and nightclubs district. Many artists had studios or worked around the community of Montmartre such as Salvador Dalí, Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso and Vincent van Gogh. When I was there last summer I wasn't too impressed with the many artists I saw working along the area. But, it's lovely to go there during the day and then at night. I wandered away from the touristy area to see the real Montmartre where the residents live. The streets are narrow and winding. I lost track of time and realized it was quite dark and I was lost. But, I could see the cathedral dome, so I just headed for it. And this is where I will be again this summer.
