Yes that is all great and wonderful, but Tasha asked why it is above the American flag.

The flag were looking at, I believe, is from a news photo of a local Carniceria. It was in the news a few years ago when a veteran saw it up there and took it down. He got into a little bit of trouble with the law for stealing the flag, but did get on to all of the TV talk shows, Larry King The Today Show and so on. He was a 15min. hero of the Anti-Amnesty crowd.

If you look at a map of the Southern and Southwestern parts of the US you'll see that most of the rivers, bays, islands, mountains and other geographical features, as well as the oldest towns and cities, have Spanish names. That's because the first European explorers and settlers in those parts were Spaniards, who began setting up housekeeping in Florida and what's now New Mexico as early as the 1500's. With the treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo in 1848,which concluded the Mexican war, Mexico ceded most of the American Southwest including California to the US, and also recognized the annexation of Texas. But although we here in the 'States think of that as ancient history and a done deal, not all Mexicans see it that way. When I was an undergradute at UT back in the 1960's some of my Latino friends would sometimes refer to Texas as Northern Occupied Mexico. And although they were kidding, beneath the humor was a long-standing resentment that most Anglos are not aware of. We are now seeing the re-Hispanization of large parts of the Southwest. Cities like Los Angeles and Houston are already over forty percent Hispanic, and even if all migration were stopped, legal and otherwise, Latinos will be the largest ethinc group in most of the Southwest in just a few years simply by virtue of their higher birthrate. And although most US Hispanics are loyal American citizens we are a long way from the last inning of this game.
