This individual's name is not 'Willy'..his name is Wile E. Coyote...'Wile' ( rhymes with 'smile') is a noun, meaning "a trick or stratagem intened to ensnare or deceive" can also be used as a transitive verb,as in 'wiled' or 'wiling' meaning "to lure or entice"...thus Wile E. would be pronounced 'Wiley' ( rhymes with 'smiley' ), the adjectival form of the word. Mr. Coyote himself pronounced his name in a 1956 Merrie Melodies cartoon entitled "To Hare is Human," ( directed by Chuck Jones, voices by Mel Blanc ) in which he co-starred with Bugs Bunny. It is not known for certain what the E. stands for in Wile's name though it has been suggested that it might be Ethelbert.
