:(... I guess I just have too much hope in humanity. Aren't I allowed even ONE irrational belief? :P..... Seriously though, just how do you suppose religion will "just kind of fade away"? It's lasted thousands and thousands of years. Even if it would eventually fade away, I think that the more people speak out against religion, the faster it will disappear. Just sitting idly by doing nothing just reinforces their own views because nobody challenges them. Maybe I won't be able to reason with the fundie idiots, but I'm sure that at least SOME people are rational enough to read my (and other people's) comments and really think about the arguments. I think younger people are open minded enough. Besides, I don't just argue with people for them, I also do it for me. I owe a LOT of my education to debates (if there is ANYTHING nice I have to say about creationists, is that they most certainly are responsible for me being who I am today), and it's just in my nature. I enjoy debating, and I refuse to let irrationality go unanswered.

Geez Bob..when are you gonna learn ?...you think you can reason with these people? None of what they believe or say has anything to do with reason or logic...save your energy...go drink a beer, read a book, go sailing, watch a ball game, hang out with your lady friend...religion will eventually just kind of fade away..kind of like communism..because of it's internal inconsistencies it'll just finally get to the point where nobody will pay much attention to it anymore..

I agree with you Bob, and I'm afraid it's impossible to reason someone out of an opinion they havent reasoned themselves into...

A president waging war who says he is on a mission from God scares the hell out of me. To me that is just as insane as saying that the imps in the forest makes you do it...
2008-04-07 09:39:25
Always thought Canadians were more sane than people from the US. The chart indicates the same.

The problem with most religion is that it is man made not God designed. Most things done in God's name make Him cringe. To know God you need to look at the New Testament to Jesus. He came so that man could see God. Any one can claim to be christian doesn't mean they are. You can tell by their actions. Look at their deeds not their words. Christainity is God trying to reach man and religion is man trying to reach a god he has made.

You can say that all you want, but he did quote the Christian God as a reason for killing the Jews. The Axis powers are actually one of the main reasons that Catholic Church is so powerful today, they funded each other quite a lot. Iraq IS based on religion, Bush has been quoted as saying that he was on a mission from God. See that's the whole point. The people in power over government and religion don't have to BE religious to USE religion against you. Christianity in its purest form is just fine, even if incorrect, but almost no one knows what that means anymore.

Yeah yeah, "sigh.. this gets old" and then you turn right back around and start insulting atheists. It's amazing you didn't see the irony. You clearly don't even know what a religion is. You're like those ignoramuses who say science is a religion. Why don't you go find out what religion and atheism ACTUALLY are before making such stupid comments?
2008-02-01 10:19:08
Gee, I thought this was a "photography site" not an Atheist vs. Christian forum. Sigh.. this gets old. Oh, by the way... Atheism IS a religion unto itself, so your doubletalk is just that...
2008-01-24 17:32:32
Religion is just another way to differentiate yourself from one another.

By saying that a TRULY religious person wouldn't do something or other, you are making the "no true Scotsman fallacy". There are SO many things which you do that would probably label you as a non-true-christian by some christians. You could even make the case that really, nobody is a true christian nowadays because they don't stone people to death for breaking certain rules (adultry, disrespectful children, etc), or they wear clothes made from different textiles, or they eat shellfish, etc. You could also make the argument that people who believe in god are more likely to kill, because they believe in an afterlife and so they don't value life as much as we atheists, etc. The point is, you can't just pick and choose. The fact is that the more religious an industrialized country is, the less moral they are. You are basically imposing your own post-hoc rationalization on present facts and historical facts. Unless you have some real evidence to back them up, I think further discussion is pointless.

I did not say that 9-11 was NOT a result of religious activity - I just tried to say (and I admit, I formulated the sentence confusing) that less people died in 400 Years of Inquisition, than in 9-11. OK, and in the article, Bob, I am tired and dont want to repeat myself, so I just mention that a religious person knows: You shalt not kill. ... speaks for itself, doesn't it?? You may now say that, however, the believe in God has bad influence in the people, but a person, who really believes in God hardly can do something against his laws, can he?? Well, I finally believe that there is no relation between it, other factors are playing the influencing part in here. After all the imperial politics was not religiously motivated, it was said it would be in the name of God to be supported by, excuse me, stupid people. Without the economical aspect a lot of bloody wars were not fought, and, consider this, even christian lands like Ethiopia were invaded by the religious country Italy (!), so half middle east by the Osman Empire, and New France by England. Religion was the coat, under the war was played...

Hitler was Anti-christian, he was cutting off the power of the christian churches in Germany, and his party, the NSDAP, was close to the Thule-Company, an occult religion with antisemitic opinion. To name you a war not based on religion is very simple, and I won't even say Iraq, to make it easy, i say, for example, the Tschechenian War. Thanks for considering my opinion.
2008-01-22 07:35:18
You didn't do what I had asked. Besides, 9-11 was a direct result of religion if you hadn't noticed. Also, the age of imperialism had very much religious undertones. The imperialist countries felt the need to tame those heathen savages who didn't share their religion. Religion wasn't the only part of it, but it did play a big role. Also, you are simply making a post hoc rationalization of their motives and whatnot. You can say that all you want, but the fact is that people very much wanted to spread their religion to other countries and whatnot. As for the statistics, you OBVIOUSLY didn't even skim the journal article. They looked EXCLUSIVELY at the industrialized countries, and the US often came out as having the worst morality while being the most religious.

I was just joking. Didn't mean to start a fire. In reality I like Canadians, they are some of the friendliest people, next to Norwegians.

I recall a political cartoon which was published in a UK paper shortly after Bush Jr.'s re-election...which showed the North American continent as "The United States of Canada" (comprised of all of Canada and roughly the north-half of the USA) and "Jesusland" (comprised of the Bible-belt). I just shake my head at the hypocritical-ness of most of the US.
2008-01-21 22:02:20
And I suppose Hitler, a professed Christian, is just not going to be included in this conversation. Name me a single war that is occurring right now that is not based on religion, and I will consider that opinion.
2008-01-21 22:01:09
Problem with this is that its based on Church records, and Churches tend to cling to membership. I'm still listed as Baptist at one Church in Georgia, even though I haven't been since I was a child (which means I wasn't ever, since most ten year olds don't really make judgments above "Mommy told me to")

It would seem, according to history at least, that the godless are less of a heathen then the religious Ahh. That must be why Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, both Kims, and other atheists killed about 100 million last century.

Based on this diagram you can clearly see that Canadians are GODLESS heathens.
