The kinkajou is a small mammal found in Central and South America. Although not uncommon it is seldom encountered by human beings because it is very shy, nocturnal and arboreal. I had a personal encounter with them when staying at a coffee plantation (La Geraldo) in El Salvador. I slept on the upper story of a cottage next to a tall avocado tree. Several kinkajou would come to feast on ripe avocados every night and this was right next to my window. However, it was impossible to photograph them. About six months later an earthquake devastated La Geraldo and the cottage. I have no way of knowing, but I like to think that the avocado tree and the kinkajous escaped the devastation and are doing fine without any human interference
