Hurricanes frequently generate tornadoes, which are tiny compared to hurricanes but have wind speeds much faster and more destructive than hurricane force winds. But by far the greatest damage done by hurricanes isn't from the wind or even tornadoes but from flooding by the storm surge that comes ashore with the hurricane. The conventional wisdom among those who live in areas where hurricanes are a threat ( like me ) is, hunker down from the wind, run from the water. Meaning...if you're pretty sure your house is above the storm surge line, batten down the hatches and ride it out. If you live at or near sea level get the hell out of Dodge.
