I've been on this tour and seen this very scenario. When I was there, the rider had a small boy on the saddle in from of him. This pic was taken on the Navajo Reservation at Monument Valley in Arizona. This is a Navajo rider who was hired to wait for the tour bus, ride out to the point, pause for the tourists to take pics, and ride back to wait for the next bus. This photo op has been run for generations, perhaps by members of the same family. A steady gig is a gift and a paycheck is, after all, a way to put food on the table. Best of luck to him!

I think your right, I must have had John Wayne in mind.

Even with the hat, I'd say that's not a cowboy on that horse. He looks like a Native American to me. I'm pretty sure that Monument Valley is either near to, or part of, the Hopi, Zuni and Navaho reservations in Arizona.

Great shot. I like the use of the cowboy and horse to give it scale, but not dominate the image.
