These are stepwells ('bawdi' in Hindi). This kinda structure can be seen in the whole west of India, where the weather is extremely dry so it´s stored in these type of wells...and the steps are there to reach the water. In those empty spaces on the wall, there should be some Hindu God statues, but they were probably taken away for cleaning or maintenance that day... Nice photo :-)
