Might look like it, but in fact this stream flows from the famous Virginia Beach Rainbow Springs a few miles east of Norfolk, where water comes from the ground in alternating shades of green, pink, yellow and sometimes orange, due, geologists explain, to layers of clays through which the water passes just before reaching the surface. The first Europeans to discover the springs attributed the strangely colored waters to sorcery or witchcraft...Spanish explorer Sancho de la Panza, who passed through the area in 1544 and who mentions the springs in his journal, described them as 'las aguas del diablo'...The Indians, however, considered them sacred, and young Indian maidens are said to have bathed in the many-hued waters prior to marriage in the belief that to do so insured fertility. The springs were located on private property and were difficult to access until 1956 when they were acquired by the Virginia State Department of Geological Anomalies, and are now open to the public.
