Actually, it is a new species recently discovered in the Chukchi Sea north of the Bering Strait. Some Russian scientists were doing a study of walruses in the area and came across this strange-looking creature. It was named after the expedition leader, Dr. Pjotr Domkovsky, and is now known as Odobenus porcus domkovsky. Interestingly, when Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld’s Vega got stuck in the ice in the Chukchi Sea in 1878, he had sighted this creature (and made some sketches), but no one believed him when he reported it in 1879 as his ship was finally released from the fetters of the ice. Dr. Domkovsky is the talk of the scientific circles, naturally, as new fauna species are very rare these days.
