Okay...here's the striaght skinny...first, only the ear lobe of Van Gog's left ear was cut off, not the entire ear, and certainly not both ears....second, it isn't even certain that Van Gogh cut off the ear lobe himself..some scholars believe that it was cut off in a fight with Paul Gauguin, who Van Gogh was stalking with a razor that night..the two were friends, or had been, but they argued and fought fiercely..this was in December, 1888..in any case, Van Gogh wrapped the ear lobe in a piece of newspaper and sent it to a prostitute he was hanging out with..it's reported that when she saw the thing she fainted..

Absinthe...wormwood?? Never heard that before. He chopped both ears. Not knowing what was wrong with him, he must have felt like it was the devil tormenting him. Apparently, Captain Kirk of Star Trek (can't remember his name for now), suffers with tinnitus; that's why he would get very angry on the set.

Now, that's one joke I've heard before, and it's still very funny ;-) Have you ever been to the Louvre Poppy? I've yet to go in there. I keep saying I'm waiting for a rainy day, but damn Paris, it never rains when I'm there. I should have gone in this time, since at times it was too hot to walk around.

Recently, a Parisian burglar nearly got away with stealing several paintings from the Louvre. However, after planning the crime, getting in and out past heavy security, he was captured only two blocks away, when his van ran out of gas. When asked how he could mastermind such a daring crime, and then make such an obvious error, he replied, "I had no Monet to buy Degas to make the Van Gogh."

I heard it was the absinthe that made him chop his ear off. Was it both ears?

Poor Van Gogh went crazy with the noise in his ears so he chopped them off. The doctors could not help him. Today we know about tinnitus, but there is still no cure. Some get partial relief from listening to certain music.
