Once a thriving, booming little city on Matagorda Bay along the Texas Gulf Coast, Indianola was a railhead, had several newspapers, a couple of baseball teams, and was second only to Galveston in terms of tonnage moved through its port. Then in 1875 it was destroyed by a hurricane. The citizens re-built the town, but after a second hurricane destroyed the town again only about ten years later the place was abandoned. Not much there nowdays but some shrimpboat docks, a few bait stands, and a monument to LaSalle, the French explorer who established a short-lived and ill-fated colony near there in the 1680's.
