Located in "Haute Provence", the northernmost part of Provence, these 32 miles long gorges carved by the river Verdon are what could be described as the French Yosemite, with cliffs up to 700m (2,300 ft)high. The surroundings are grandiose and austere and the highest mountain bordering the gorge is +/- 7,200 ft. In winter, the high road following the north side of the south bench (the gorges are oriented East-West) is often closed due to ice and snow (it is also very curvy an spectacular).
