Baseball began in England not the US
2011-10-19 15:29:11
Some form of organized baseball is played in over 70 countries. Over a dozen countries participate in Olympic baseball. Baseball is may not be the King of Sports, but it is the King of Ball Games, and not because of it's popularity or because of how many people watch it. In fact, in the US, where it began, more people now watch football than baseball. Baseball is the King of Ball Games because of the great precision required combined with the element of physcial danger involved. A baseball is small, hard, and very fast, and to play the game requires not only great skill but greater courage than does any other team sport played with a ball.

I was just kidding, I'm from the Midwest :)

When I first commented on under this photo, my point was to say that in Australian Rules Football, we don't need to pad up like you guys do for this sport. And I can't understand why you put the word 'foot' into this game. Australian Rules has alot of kicking in it, but in Gridiron, don't you pass the ball by hand across the ground ? I used to like sport in my younger years, but as I have become older, my tolerance for sport has gone down quite alot. Enjoy the game, Hypolite. Good to talk to you. Take care... :)

That is not bad meant PG, but women have not the right spirit for that kind of games. Let the cobbler stick to his last!

You're proud when you yank your crank.

And I'll have you know too that alot of women follow Australian Rules Football here. No-one stereotypes us here in Australia. We follow what we want to follow, not because it's for men or it's for women.... :(

You can have it, Hypolite. I'd rather be in my kitchen any old day than watch boring old sport. I have to laugh though at your username. Politeness is not one of your strong points by the look of your comment... :(

American football, rugby and so on is for men, not for girls! Go back to your kitchen, Picturegirl!

It's racist when its yanks and I'm proud of it

There are over three hundred million people in the US, and they are of every nationality, race, color and ethnic group. To dump them all into a single category isn't racist: it's naive, simplistic and stupid.

Americans are arrogant and self-centered and think the world revolves around them. There is nothing but a black hole beyond their borders. Is that racist?

You started off with soccer but never went further in giving a reason why it is the most refined. You quickly went on to rugby/football then baseball. Baseball does not reign in Europe and the King of Sports is different in every country. We don't have a monopoly on what is the King of Sports.

Of the several games called football the game of soccer is the most refined. Rugby and American and Australian football are all essentially crude shoving and pushing contests where brute strength and size trumps skill and athletic ability, with the exception of the forward pass in American football, which does require skill, judgement and athleticism and elevates that game a bit above the other two sports. But all the higher and more elegant games are played with some form of stick, and the most refined and sophisticated of these is, of course, baseball, which requires not only more skill, precision and finesse but also, because of the hardness and velocity of the ball, more sheer physical courage than any other team sport played with a ball. That's why baseball reigns virtually unchallenged as the King of Sports.

I don't think REAL football will ever be popular in Croatia. Soccer is very popular here, every village have own team. In those matches (village vs village) average is 0,3 broken bones per game. I don't wanna even think what will happen if we start to play full contact team sport. I guess a players will soon end in a hospital/jail/graveyard...

Thank you very much WF! Finally some rational explanation of naming that game.

American football was originally called Leg Ball when it was first played by Ivy League schools in the early 1800's, and might be still called that today had it not been for the influence of Harvard's famous coach, J. Worthington Foot, who led the Crimson to seven consecutive championships. So great was his fame and so pervasive his effect on how the game was played that people began calling it "Foot's Ball Game," which evolved into simply "Foot's Ball," then "Football."

How close is soccer/football with American football??? Rules: both have two goals ( sort of ) and one ball, that's all they have in common, but still you cal it football . Why don't you call it American rugby? That's my question...
2011-10-17 17:10:24
Close...but in American football the forward pass has become the single most potent offensive play, and there is no forward pass in rugby. Also, in American football a play is over when the ball-carrier's knee touches the ground. Then you line up and start over with another play.

American football=rugby+helmets... more o less. :/
2011-10-17 16:41:10
OK, I don't get it... Can someone can explain me why o why you don't call it rugby???
2011-10-17 16:01:40
Real football is Australian Rules Football. We don't pad up like you guys do and we are not afraid to get hurt.
2011-10-17 15:14:12
Glad to see those folks over there are learning to play REAL football !

Greek defensive end Demtrius Kazantzakis tackles Croatian fullback Vladko Banovina in Croatia's own end zone for a safety, the game's only score.
