The poet William Carlos Williams was walking along the streets of New York City on a rainy day back in the early 1920's when a fire truck went past with bells clanging and sirens screaming and the letter 5, in gold, on its door..Williams, a sensitive kinda guy as poets tend to be, was apparently sorta gobsmacked by the experience, so he whipped out his pen and pad and wrote a poem about it called "The Great Figure," one line of which is "I saw the figure 5 in gold." Then a few years later, his pal Charles Demuth, the painter, created a work inspired by his friend's poem, which he titled "I saw the figure 5 in gold."
