By 1941 the Fairey Swordfish was no longer a very modern airplane, but it was what the British had, and so a flight of old and almost obsolete airplanes attacked the most modern and powerful warship on earth. As it turned out, the old airplanes flew so slowly that the German anti-aircraft shells exploded ahead of them, and they were able to fly so low over the water that the Germans could not depress their guns low enough to fire directly at them. A torpedo launched by a Swordfish flying from HMS Ark Royal struck the Bismarck aft and disabled her rudder, thus crippling her. Unable to maneuver, she was struck repeatedly by shell fire from British ships and sunk.
