My answer is no. It's a bad idea to try to put the Welfare system in the law enforcement business. Leonard Wilson's employers are taking steps to keep his workplace safe. They're not in charge of overseeing how he spends his money.

His company uses drug tests to keep the work environment drug-free. This is akin to barring an overly intoxicated person from your home. He's implying that passing a drug test is a kind of yardstick for entitlement to getting a paycheck. This is false. It's not the purpose of the drug test. I'm pro law enforcement. I'm anti drug use. I don't think the welfare mechanism should be pressed into service as a form of law enforcement. I don't think creating this kind of tie tie between these two governmental functions will serve either cause.

Waht about the welfare check to the banks, farmers, and Pentagon as well as Iraq, Israel, Columbia, Pakistan ad nauseum and while we're at it, why don't they drug test the president, congfress, and the cops. Me, I'm an old reefer fan, but I'd pass. Would Dick Cheney?

If you think complex social, economic and civil liberties issues can be addressed by questions that can be answered with a simple yes or no, you have some seriously messed up understanding of those issues.

So its okay to receive government assistance and spend it on drugs? If your answer to that is no then what's the problem with a drug test before you receive that assistance? If your answer to that is yes you have some seriously messed up priorities.

Excellent idea, Kevin..let's go back to the way it used to be, by God, when poor people without means were on their own. When children went hungry and the sick ones just died in the gutter. Old and poor? Too ill to work ? Cripppled on the job ? Laid off and can't feed your family ? Tough shit, right Kevin?

Excellent sentiment, this editorial. Better yet, just cut the handouts altogether.

This makes no sense at all. He's trying to take something his employer does to protect their workplace, and re-cast it as some kind of good citizenship criteria. It's a damn slippery slope, Leonard. I presume it's for the appearance of political correctness that you stop short of insisting they all get jobs...
