This photo is from Steffen Binke's web site and was identified by him as a "Dwarf Minke Whale". This is the same whale, whose photo by Steffen Binke, has been recently uploaded by War Eagle and then as a repost by Ludwig. The specific identity of the whale has been under question however Binke, who is in a better position to know than War Eagle, Ludwig, Poppy or Fuzzy Blue One, identified it as a Minke Whale and also as a Dwarf Minke Whale. Identification as a "Dwarf Minke Whale" is very subjective as there has never been a published description, or a scientific name, as such. However, the Minke Whales in the Australian Barrier Reef have been under study for some time and the general feeling is that they will eventually be described either as a distinct new species or as a subspecies of the Northern Minke Whale (B. acutorastrata). Blue Whales are not even known to occur in the Great Barrier Reef area.
