Bapak Yali and the rest was his family. They lived at Kurulu village near Wamena. They have cell phones also and use 3G mobile and Internet cafes.
The Danni have been using laptops, solar panels and cell phones for more than 10 years. They also use Internet Cafés and 3G mobile broadband. They have their own websites.
The Danni first got metal in 1962. They went from the stone age to the Internet in 38 years.
Why is anyone surprised or saddened by this? How else will they survive in the modern world and still retain their culture?
It seems to me we ought to be sharing this technology a bit more around our Global village.
This is the 21st Century...
Papua is not in Africa, this is in Indonesia, in the half of New Guinea that belongs to indonesia. It's not a fake, there are other photos of this tribe with the Vaio here:
This is depressing. They don't need our technology. They have already surpassed it by being able to coexist with nature and not destroy it in the process.
I don't know why people find this so un-likely or difficult to believe..if those fundamentalist red-neck crackers in Mississippi and Alabama and those fundmentalist rag-head hajis in the Middle East can learn to use a computer, hell, just about anybody oughta be able to.
It could be, but its not unheard of for tribesmen to be given technology. Remember many of these tribes live within foot travel distance of modern cities.
