compared to the damage you'd get if that much energy was expended into the bumpers as they were designed. one of those cars may salvageable.

not necessarily; both cars have somewhat rounded front ends. if the driver in front has a panic stop and hits the brakes hard, the inertia of car will still be acting as a force of forward momentum. the action of the brakes arresting that momentum cause the first car to lean forward on the pavement, as the front of the car dips from the friction and the back of the car continues, driving the car's center of gravity forward and slightly higher, while lifting the back end of the car. if the car behind strikes the car in front at the right time, and is also braking in panic mode, driving it's front end downward, the added force combined with the changes to the center of gravity and inertia of the lead vehicle can allow the following car to drive part way underneath as you see in this picture. it probably costs less to repair, too...

OK ! But how did they manage to do it ? The back wheels of the black one must have been off the ground for the silver one to slip under!
