Cool Springs is in NW Arizona, just north of historic route 66 and on the way to Oatman. This old gas station fell into ruin back before the 1920's. However in 2004 was refurbished to it's original appearance by using the remaining rubble and historic photos. It is now a popular tourist stopping point and photo opportunity. At one time there were very many filling stations of this type in the American Southwest, but excluding this one, they have been nothing but memories for over 50 years. It is nice to have something like this restored, but everybody should know that it is just that -- a restoration.

These kinds of funky home-made buuildings are all over the American Southwest. Lumber was expensive, so folks built with what they had, which was adobe and stone. Plenty of this kind of stuff to be seen , but you've got to get off the Interstate.

I've been on the Arizona side of Hoover Dam. We went up there while on tdy at Nellis AFB in Las Vegas. That was a long time ago when I was in the Air Force. I was only twenty years old at the time. If I had seen anything like this gas station ;.. I wouldn't have paid much attention to it. :)
