Capercaillie is the Scottish-Gaelic name for what is called in English a Wood Grouse or Heather Cock. It's a fairly large bird ( up to 7 kg ) that can spread its tail like a turkey. There are old Scottish recipes for the bird, which was said to be quite tasty, but in England recently a cook book that contained a Capercaillie recipe was rigorously protested by conservationists, and there are very stiff fines for killing one. Capercailie is also the name of a rockin' Scottish band that plays traditional/contemporary fusion Gaelic music.
