Parrots on an oak tree... now that would be a sight to see. I'm used to seeing them more here on the eucalyptus trees, not oak...

I live in an old port city on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico...seamen on ships from Latin America have been supplementing their incomes by smuggling parrots ashore for over a century...but sometimes, if they are about to be boarded by the Coast Guard before the make port, they will release the birds rather than risk being caught with them..the parrots fly here since we are the nearest land, and since we have a warm, semi-tropical climate, many of them adapt and live here for years...it's a strange sight to see one of these bright 'technicolor' birds at your backyard feeder, your bird bath, or hopping around in your live oak tree...

Although it is illegal, boys in this region of Nicaragua will steal young parrots from their nests to raise them and sell to travelers along the highway. As reprehensible as this is, it is a very common activity.
