Back around the late 1800's and early 1900's they did that to the women so they had a better chance or marrying a wealthy man, it was concitered to be beautiful. It started with a dancer with naturaly small feet, they thought she was beautiful so they took a special cotton wrap and the bound the foot. It takes about 4-6 years to get the desired size(which was around 3 inches)The parents did it to the children (female) when the are young. It was horribly painful. I did a report on this at the beging of last year in sixth grade. For more refrence look up a book Ties That Bind Ties that break.

Foot binding was a Chinese custom, but is now against the law. It is no longer practised. It was a painful process.
