Looks like it's related to the Portuguese Man of War jellyfish, so I'd guess they DO sting.

I grew up on Coogee beach - well a couple of blocks away from it - spent most of my childhood getting dumped in the surf there. I would recognise that patch of sand anywhere ... really!
