In South Texas and down in Mexico they call this fellow 'Paisano,' which means something like 'countryman' or 'compadre'...they also used to be called by some folks the 'Texas Bird of Paradise'..there's a story about a Yankee from back east traveling by horseback across the desert brush country down near the Big Bend when one of these jumped up and ran across the trail.."what was that thing" the Yankee asked the guide..."that's a Texas Bird of Paradise," the guide explained.. the Yankee said, "he's a hell of a long way from home !" Note: the scissor-tailed flycatcher is also sometimes called the Texas Bird of Paradise...
