Thanks for the explanation. What are the little things for that stick out of the houses? Tiny openings for light and air if the door is closed?

The Syrian Beehive homes are made entirely of compacted mud. They are very high and have very thick walls. Large doors, but few or no windows. The beehive home usually consists of several of the individual beehive "cells" that are connected together by low passageways or even tunnels. These homes are found in the desert region surrounding Aleppo in the extreme north of Syria. Even without windows the rooms are quite bright during the daylight hours because of the very large doors that are generally kept open.
